British Columbia's maritime sector (also known as the marine trades) is the largest in Canada and the Port of Vancouver is the third largest in North America. Over 1,000 marine industry companies are headquartered in the province, including shipbuilding, refit and repair, professional services, research and technology, and ocean sciences. The maritime trades industry supports a diverse workforce of more than 34,000 and contributes about $4.4 billion to the provincial economy. It also plays a major role in the development of the "Blue Economy" by introducing sustainable activities that improve the marine environment and creating new and diverse job opportunities.
Like other industries in the province, keeping up with rapidly changing technologies and workplace demands is an ongoing challenge for maritime trades professionals and their employers. In response to these acknowledged training gaps, the BC government created the TradeUpBC (TUBC) program. TUBC provides experienced tradespeople and those who employ them with easy access to specially designed short, professional development courses and certificate programs to ensure they remain resilient, adaptable, and inclusive.
The courses for tradespeople are specially designed to meet the anticipated needs of seven unique industry sectors: Construction, Environmental, Hair and Esthetics, Hospitality, Manufacturing, Transportation, and, of course, the Maritime industry. The maritime courses cover a wide and diverse range of subjects, including leadership, conflict resolution, emerging technologies, accounting, business, and climate change. Depending on the course and institute, the programs offer a variety of flexible learning options, including online, in-person, and/or hybrid delivery models.
