Clean Energy, Sustainability, Climate Change or the Green Economy. Whatever you choose to call it, British Columbia's vibrant Environmental Industry is a growing economic driver.
Key statistics show robust job growth and higher-than-average salaries. Major job clusters in Victoria, Kelowna, and Metro Vancouver are driven by a provincial focus on sustainable management, carbon reduction policies, and clean technology innovations. In 2023, BC had the second-highest number of job postings requiring "green skills" among Canadian provinces. The most in-demand occupations for these skills include civil and electrical engineers, administrative officers, and corporate managers.
Despite the recent economic downturn, Green Energy jobs in BC are booming across wind, solar, hydro, biomass, and energy efficiency sectors. There are a wide variety of roles within these sectors, including skilled trades like technicians and installers, project managers, environmental researchers and scientists, government and Indigenous relations specialists, and sales and marketing professionals. These opportunities are distributed across the province, from major urban centres to small towns and remote communities.
As Canada continues its march to an environmentally sustainable future, there will no doubt be more jobs available to those seeking a career in the Green Economy. At present, the three largest areas of demand are renewable generation, energy efficiency, and clean transportation and related technologies.
With this in mind, the BC Government's TradeUpBC program offers experienced trades professionals and others easy access to courses and professional development programs offered by BC's post-secondary institutes. These short courses and micro-credentials are carefully designed to provide ongoing support to those seeking to keep up with rapidly changing workplace demands, advance their careers, or prepare for a career change.
